First off, this is seriously one of the best albums that I have heard in a really long time. One of the best I've ever heard, actually. SO it really is one that's worth listening to or buying. Even if you're not a fan, just listen to a few tracks on Youtube, and if you like what you're hearing, go buy his album because it's seriously awesome. Like his previous album it didn't immediately hit me on the first listen, but after 2 listens I really started to get the feeling in it. And this was no sloppily-done, rushed-together piece of work. It took 15 months of painstaking work for it to be put together. The whole album follows the primary structure of his previous album, with an English track written by Anthony himself.
<Wake Up> has a powerful riff which keeps it going throughout the song, and his powerful lyrics meshed with the way the song was produced give it a really interesting doo-wop feel to me. My own interpretation, I don't know. Anyway, the catchy melody and beats made this one of my favourite songs in the album.
The second song <这一刻 This Moment>has lyrics penned by Producer SKOT SUYAMA 陶山's wife, singer JASMINE TING 庭竹. They really hit the spot as it tells of a timeless moment where everything stands still, which really merges with the structure of the song, which starts off slow with simple piano accompaniment, and then builds its way up with drum beats and reaches its peak in the chorus. I especially love the use of acapella in this, which also helps with the building up of the song and really keeps it going.
The third track <失败的分手 Failed Breakup> was written by the same people who wrote his previous K-hit, <散场的拥抱 The Last Embrace> and there is no doubt that it hasn't failed him the second time round. His beautiful voice captures every nuance of the song, the ups and downs and makes it what it is - a really sad ballad which makes you really sad when you listen to it.
<傀儡 Puppet> the fourth track has a similar structure to Track 2, but takes a different approach to it, which is kind of hard to do. Again, it starts off with a piano intro and builds it up, but does it in a way which mirrors the feel of this song, which is about him being a puppet in the arms of someone else. The chorus really mirrors the emotions of this song, by the way the melody jumps up and down, imitating the way he is being handled like a puppet. The whistling gives it a lighter feel which makes it anything but another ballad.
Another one of my favourite songs on this album <让我爱她 Let Me Love Her> is a stripped-down classic rock ballad. Again, good play on dynamics which actually happens throughout the album, which is impressive. The backing vocals merges really well with the melody line, especially during the chorus. Not to mention the heartbreaking lyrics about death taking him away from his love suddenly before he's even said that he loves her (paraphrasing the lyrics). And the way he uses his voice in this-spectacular.
It only gets better after this; the 6th track <救命 Save Me> is a full-on rock track with a little punk influence in there. Really good for stress-release. I also like the piano part in the chorus which gives it a different feel. It has to be mentioned once again; Anthony's vocals squeeze the emotion out of every inch of the song, every last note, no matter how long or short is sang to perfection. His strong vocals also provide this song with the dynamics needed to make it the song that it is. The next two tracks are more folk-inspired, but yet still show off his voice, while also following the concept of dreams and the subconscious.
The ninth track <Letters>, lyrics penned by Anthony lends to the song an atmosphere of comfort which makes the song relatable. It also makes people listening to it feel all warm and cuddly inside. Just saying. The meaning behind this song is powerful in a subtle way. it's a stripped down track with minimal isntrumentals, bringing out Anthony's husky vocals. The bridge with the repetition of the lyrics "You're not alone" was really powerful to me, and the play with gospel rock backing vocals thanks to Anthony's best friend and producer WILL PENG 仔仔 was a nice touch.
The last track <一觉醒来 Wake Up>, also the first single released, really shows us a different dimension to Anthony's voice that I, for one, had never really heard before.
Overall, a wonderful listen.
